Week 3 Cultural Context & Diversity Portfolio
Cultural Perspectives of Art
Art can raise awareness to social issues. Banksy, for example, often comments on the mass surveillance of the public.
One image of his was entitled "CCTV". Banksy wants viewers to understand that they are constantly being watched. A painting like this would not have been made some years ago, because it was not an issue in the past. However, the advancement of technology has facilitated the problem. Therefore, the piece is a mark of the time.
Cultural Learning Experience
On a personal level, I find visiting art museums in both Orlando and Barcelona simply fun! And while I could appreciate art alone, I enjoy touring museums in both locations because I do so with friends. We are able to help each other analyze and understand different pieces. A single art piece can contain so much, and details are easily missed. But two sets of eyes makes this less likely. In general, museums can act as a good place to form deeper connections with friends and family. You might better learn how they perceive the world.
Developing Cultural Competency
The trams are often packed in Barcelona. However, when an elderly person boards the tram, usually I see multiple people get out of their seats so they can sit. I find it to be very kind, and reflective of their broader society.
The US doesn’t have an emphasis on public transportation, so I can’t say this wouldn’t happen in the states. But in general, people from Barcelona seem to have a lot of respect for older generations.
Cultural competency means observing and reflecting. You should always observe the way locals move, and not interrupt the flow of their daily lives. And if you are able, you should join the flow!
In Barcelona, this might mean keeping your voice down on public transportation. Or, it might mean that you are extra careful to watch your items when on the metro.
Developing cultural competency keeps you and your belongings safe, makes the locals happier, and allows you to have a more authentic experience in Barcelona.
